"We invite you to begin by prayerfully reflecting on the blessings you have received and the capacity you have to respond based on your income or assets."

Foundations of Faith Capital Campaign

In January 2007 the Church of St. Peter began a capital campaign, Foundations of Faith: Honoring our Tradition, Building our Future ,to raise the funds necessary for our proposed construction.

The campaign, provides the people at St. Peter, the opportunity to thank God for all we were grateful for yesterday, for all we are blessed with today and for how we can make a difference for present and future generations.

Please keep our capital campaign and our building project in your daily prayers and the prayers of your family, through the intercession of St. Mary.

The Foundations of Faith capital campaign allows the people of St. Peter to help chart the future of our parish today, while also relieving the current pressures and challenges on our existing facilities, solidifying a strong Catholic presence in the changing area we serve, and extends a welcome invitation to everyone to participate.

What Kind of Financial Support Will Be Needed

To help our new church and related facilities building project move forward, we will need significant financial support from all members and friends of the Church of St. Peter. In practical terms what does "significant financial support" really mean?

The fundraising process can create confusion, particularly with our use of terminology. when we see the words donation, contribution or commitment, is there a difference? Do they invite the same level of consideration and response?

A donation can be considered a response based on what might be immediately available to offer. Examples include a donation of canned goods to a food shelf, a few coins or a dollar bill placed in the red kettle at the mall, or a bag of surplus clothing from our closet. Typically, donations include loose change, cash or items we have readily accessible.

A contribution requires more though and often the need to have a record to demonstrate our charitable support. Examples include writing a check to a local wildlife group, purchasing a Happenings Book to support youth sports activities, or becoming a sustaining member of a charitable organization. Contributions move the fundraising process to the next level.

A commitment requires serious and prayerful reflection, not a casual or reactive impulse gift. It should demonstrate a willingness to thoughtfully examine our capacity to respond. In most instances a commitment requires a serious leap of faith, trusting that God will care for our needs. Examples include entering into a personal relationship, purchasing a home, changing careers, or moving to a new city. A commitment of this nature requires that we pause from our busy lives to seriously consider the lasting impact our response can and will demonstrate.

Every household is invited to share from their substance, and responds with a meaningful commitment, based on their capacity. This is a golden opportunity to leave our footprints for those who will follow in this century.

How will we choose to let God speak through our actions? Together, one commitment at a time, we can and will honor our traditions and build our future.

Supporting the Campaign
Cash Gifts
Outright gifts of cash, either given immediately or committed over a period of three tax years, is the most prevalent and and often the simplest way to make a commitment. Current tax law provides a substantial deduction from your adjusted gross income for a contribution made in any calendar year. See Tax Table.

Appreciated Property
You may find that gifts of appreciated property, such as real estate holdings, a personal residence, a second home, land, common stock, bonds or other securities could offer a significant tax savings.

Closely Held Stock
Stock contributed from a family business or other closely held stock may offer the opportunity to maximize your commitment to our campaign and receive the tax deduction for the gift, and eliminate substantial taxes on capital gains realized between the acquisition date of the stock and the contribution date.

If you intend to transfer shares of stock or securities, it is important for your broker to call Greg Hereford at (651)777-8304 ext. 310 and indicate the impending action. Be certain to instruct your broker to transfer the shares of stock directly to the Church of St. Peter and not sell the stock and then transfer the proceeds to the parish to maximize your tax savings.

IRA Charitable Gifting
Under the new Pension Protection Act of 2006, anyone age 70 1/2 or older who has an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), may take a direct transfer of those IRA funds to our parish. The transfer may be up to $100,000 in one year. The legislation provides that this opportunity will be available in calendar year 2007 only. This tax incentive regarding IRA contributions provides a marvelous gift opportunity for senior parishioners owning IRA's.
Employer Matching Funds
You may wish to consult with your employer to determine if a matching gift from your company can double the value of your contribution to our capital campaign.

Good Counsel Is Essential
We encourage you to seek the counsel of a financial planner or tax advisor to determine the most tax-wise method of making a commitment to our capital campaign AND the best way to satisfy your financial planning needs. If you do not have an advisor, please contact Greg Hereford (651) 777-8304 ext. 310 and he will be happy to provide you with volunteer resources who will answer your questions in a professional and timely manner.
