Summer Book Club

Interested in viewing literature and film from the Catholic perspective this summer? Come explore some of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories as well as a documentary on the monastic life in the remote Swiss Alps! This coming summer, the Faith Formation Department at the Church of St. Peter will provide an opportunity to critically explore three short stories and a film from the Catholic perspective.

We will first be reading and discussing three of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories: “Revelation”, “Parker’s Back” and “The Lame Shall Enter First.” Her writings are distinctive in their gritty, sometimes graphic depiction of the grace of God working in the lives of ordinary people.

For our film choice, the group will be viewing the documentary, “Into Great Silence”. This documentary comes from German filmmaker Philip Groning, who spent six months living in monk’s quarters at the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the Swiss Alps, filming and experiencing the daily rituals, prayers and lifestyle of the monks in one of the world’s most ascetic monasteries.

The group will meet at the Parish Conference Room five times during June and July, on the following Wednesdays: June 11th and 25th, July 9th, 16th and 23rd. We will begin at 10:30 AM, and should be finished before noon. The exception will be July 16th, when we will meet at 9:45 a.m. to view the documentary, which is about 2 hours, 45 minutes long.

The program is open to any adult or young adult from the parish or the surrounding community. The cost is $15 per person, and includes a copy of Flannery O’Connor’s The Complete Stories, a compilation of all of her short stories.

Please print a registration form here. Registration forms and payment can be dropped off at the Parish Office during the week, or mailed to:

2008-09 Bible Study

The Acts of the Apostles 10 Week Study

Meet two of the early Church's most significant leaders in the persons of Peter and Paul as we journey through the Acts of the Apostles. This study, using the Little Rock Scripture Studies, shows how the excitement of Pentecost enlivens the early believers in their struggles to establish communities of faith—struggles surprisingly like today. This study includes small group discussion and lectures on DVD. Sessions meet Tuesday mornings or Thursday evenings for ten weeks beginning in September.

Paul's Letters from Prison 10 Week Study

In these letters of encouragement, correction, and instruction written from prison, Paul lovingly pastors the young communities of Asia and Macedonia. These letters inspire and challenge us to greater discipleship. This study includes small group discussion and lectures on DVD. Sessions meet Tuesday mornings or Thursday evenings for ten weeks beginning in January of 2009.

Each session costs $15 and includes weekly meetings and study guide.

Reserve you spot today by completing the following registration forms and including a check made payable to the Church of St. Peter for $15 for each study. Mail the registration form and your payment to:
